On behalf of the Sutton Select Board, Nancy Glynn will present the Boston Post Cane to Carroll “Pete” Thompson, recognizing him as the longest living resident of Sutton in a public ceremony at Pillsbury Memorial Hall at  5:30pm on Friday, November 22nd. Jack Noon, Town Historian, will deliver opening remarks.

The Boston Post Cane tradition began August 2, 1909, when Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, sent canes to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns across New England with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest male citizen of the town. In 1930, women became eligible for the cane.

The original canes were crafted from ebony in New York by J.F. Fradley and Co. and were finished with a 14-carat gold head. The ebony was shipped in seven-foot lengths from the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo. The Select Board is pleased to present a replica of the original cane.

All are welcome to celebrate Pete and this joyous milestone!
